How the states are organized
The 48 contiguous states share land borders with each other, while Alaska and Hawaii are separated from the mainland. The Census Bureau groups the states into four regions — Northeast, Midwest, South, and West — and nine divisions within them, with 16 states in the South, 13 in the West, 12 in the Midwest and nine in the Northeast. Each state is further divided into counties, 3,142 of them nationwide.
Most states have two abbreviations in common use: the two-letter postal code shown above (see the full abbreviations list) and a longer traditional form kept by newspaper and legal style guides — Calif., Mass., Tenn. Eight states have only the postal code, because their names are already short enough to write out: Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Ohio, Texas and Utah. Postal codes are what you'll see on envelopes, forms, and most modern maps.
How to read a state's borders
Two kinds of line divide the map. In the East, borders follow water and terrain: the Mississippi separates ten states, the Ohio River traces the southern edge of Ohio, Indiana and Illinois, and the crest of the Appalachians shaped Virginia and West Virginia. West of the Missouri, borders were surveyed before most of the land was settled, so they run along parallels and meridians — which is why Colorado and Wyoming are rectangles and why so many western counties are too.
What each state page covers
Every state page opens with the state highlighted on the national map, then gives the capital, the largest city, the 2024 population estimate, the land area, the Census region and division, the time zone or zones it falls in, its county count, the year it entered the Union, and each state it borders. Below that are the cities that carry its population — linked to the 100 largest US cities where they appear — the rivers and ranges that define it, and a printable outline you can download as SVG.
